“The Ghana Psychology Council is the only Regulatory Body mandated by the Health Professions Act 857 Section 5 to register and license all persons who have been trained in Psychology and Applied Psychology to enable them practice legally in Ghana.”

What we do

GPC is an independent quality and standards organisation, appointed as an external accreditation entity for the Psychology Profession in Ghana under the Health Professions Bodies Regulation Act 2013 (Act 857).  GPC develops and reviews accreditation standards for psychology programmes of study in Ghana. We then work with National Accreditation Board, education providers and use the accreditation standards to determine whether programmes of study for students seeking to practice as a registered psychologist, paraprofessional and lay practitioner in Ghana meet the required education standards. GPC accredits all applied psychology programmes of study in the country.

In Summary we

  1. Assess facilities and content of programmes for the training of psychologists, therapists, paraprofessionals and lay practitioners (lay counsellors)
  2. Ensure that the pre-registration training of newly qualified psychologists, therapists, paraprofessionals and lay practitioners in accredited training institutions meets the required standards;
  3. Conduct examinations for the registration of foreign trained psychologists, therapists, paraprofessionals and lay practitioners
  4. Conduct examinations for the registration of locally trained psychologists, therapists, paraprofessionals and lay practitioners who do not meet the prescribed conditions for registration
